A clear, practical guide to choosing between IELTS Academic and General Training based on your study, work or migration goal.
The short answer
Choose IELTS Academic if you are applying to a university or a professional registration body. Choose General Training if your goal is migration (for example to Australia, Canada or the UK) or certain work and secondary-education programmes.
The Listening and Speaking sections are identical in both modules. Only Reading and Writing differ — which is exactly where most candidates need targeted preparation.
How Reading differs
Academic Reading uses passages from journals, books and newspapers — denser, more analytical texts. General Training Reading uses everyday material: notices, advertisements, workplace documents and longer general-interest passages.
If you find academic texts intimidating, that is normal. Our IELTS programme drills the specific question types so the format stops being the obstacle.
How Writing differs
In Academic Writing Task 1 you describe a chart, graph, table or process. In General Training Task 1 you write a letter (formal, semi-formal or informal). Task 2 is an essay in both, but academic prompts tend to be more abstract.
Under a Cambridge Examiner Alumnus, we coach the exact band-descriptor criteria — task response, coherence, lexical resource and grammatical range — so your writing earns the score it deserves.
